WHERE THE 100 TOMORROW JOURNEY BEGINS

50 Today 100 Tomorrow

What if the greatest risk in retirement isn't running out of money... but running out of healthy years?

It's a different way of thinking about retirement, where money matters because of the life it helps you live.

50 Today 100 Tomorrow isn’t simply a book about retirement.

It’s about making better decisions today so you have more choices tomorrow.

Whether you’re in your forties, fifties, sixties or beyond, the choices you make now will shape the opportunities available to your future self.

Through practical ideas, real-life stories and thought-provoking questions, 50 TODAY 100 TOMORROW explores not only how you might fund the years ahead, but how you want to live them.

Why This Book?

For almost three decades... helping people with their financial planning, I’ve had thousands of conversations with those preparing for retirement and the years beyond work.

Most began with questions about pensions, investments or tax.

But those were rarely the hardest questions.

The biggest questions were often much more personal.

"Can I afford to retire?"

"Should I help my children financially?"

"Is now the right time to spend more?"

"What if I run out of money?"

"What if I run out of time?"

Again and again, I realised retirement planning isn't just about money.

It’s about balancing wealth with health, family, purpose, experiences and time.

I wrote 50 Today, 100 Tomorrow to help people think differently about those choices—and to start better conversations about what really matters.

A Different Way of Thinking

Many retirement books begin with a simple question:

"How much money do I need?"

That's an important question.

But it isn't the first question.

Perhaps the better question is:

"What kind of life am I trying to create?"

Money matters because it gives us choices.

The purpose of financial planning isn't to accumulate the largest possible investment portfolio.

It’s to help you live the life you want, support the people you love, and make the most of the years ahead.

The book invites you to look beyond the numbers and consider the life those numbers are there to support.

A Glimpse Inside

The book combines practical frameworks with stories drawn from nearly thirty years of conversations with clients.

Throughout the book you'll be invited to consider questions such as…

What does “enough” look like for you?

Are you postponing experiences for a future that may not arrive in the form you expect?

Could fear of running out of money prevent you from making the most of the money you have?

What would an ordinary Tuesday look like in the life you are planning?

These are not questions with one correct answer.

They are invitations to pause, reflect and make more deliberate choices.

What You'll Discover

Rather than offering a list of financial products or technical strategies, the book explores practical ideas and frameworks that can change the way you think about life after work.

  • The 21 Boxes framework for visualising the years ahead.

  • Why understanding “enough” may be more valuable than continually chasing more.

  • The hidden cost of delaying experiences until "one day".

  • Why opportunity cost applies to time as much as money.

  • How to make the most of your Good Years.

  • Balancing generosity towards family with protecting your own future.

  • The psychology behind retirement decisions.

  • Building a life you'll enjoy—not simply one you can afford.

These aren't rules.

They're ideas designed to help you make decisions that are right for you.

Who Is This Book For?

This book isn't just for people approaching retirement.

It's for anyone who believes tomorrow is worth planning for.

You might be:

  • Thinking seriously about when—or whether—to retire.

  • Wondering whether you're saving enough—or perhaps saving too much.

  • Balancing your own future with supporting children or ageing parents.

  • Looking for more purpose and fulfilment in the next stage of life.

  • Simply asking yourself whether you're making the most of the time you have.

Whatever your circumstances, the book will not tell you how to live.

It's to help you think more clearly about the choices available to you.
